Time Management Tips Every Business Owner Must Know

51CevmgXsUL__SY300_Most professionals will admit that time management is not their area of expertise. Business Owners, in particular, are
savvy procrastinators who will delay important tasks until the very last minute. This is not only detrimental to the business itself but also an indication of poor leadership. Time management is a skill that all business owners must develop in order to achieve excellence. Without it sales will plummet, deadlines will go unmet, and key relationships will suffer. Let’s learn about some ways to master the skill of time management to ensure your professional success!

1. MAKE A LIST! There is great value in putting your plans on paper. Human beings are visual creates who are more likely to complete tasks when they are written down. You can make a list using pen and paper, a computer calendar, or a fancy app on your cell phone. Whatever method you use make certain that your list is easily accessible and specific enough for you to follow.

2. COMPLETE YOUR MOST DIFFICULT (OR BORING) TASKS FIRST! Most individuals will delay the items (or people) they don’t want to address until the end of their day. This is a BIG mistake. By getting the most difficult tasks out of the way first you are setting yourself up for a more productive day. Let’s face it- the least enjoyable tasks are often the most important to the success of your business and overall professional development.

3. PLAN OUT YOUR DAY THE NIGHT BEFORE! Advanced planning is key to the success of your business. Always review your schedule (meetings/to do list/follow up items) the night before to ensure a stress free work day. Want a stress free morning? Iron your clothes, pack your lunch, and organize your work bag the night before.  Anything you can check off your list ahead of time will promote increased concentration and overall well being. As the leader for your company you must do everything possible to create a peaceful environment both in and out of the office. Preparing for your day the night before is critical to this process.

4. PRACTICE MINDFULNESS! Many of my coaching clients have poor time management skills because they race from one task to the other. They focus on getting as many things done as possible without giving each task the full attention it deserves. When engaged in an activity (writing a report, attending a meeting, calculating a profit margin) focus ALL your attention on this one task. Do not think about what you’re going to have for lunch or the stack of papers sitting on your desk. By staying in the present moment you will make fewer errors and produce quality work for your business. STOP RUSHING!

5. SHUT OUT DISTRACTIONS! In a world of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and flat screen TV’s it can be easy to become distracted from your important work. If you plan to embrace excellence you must learn to SHUT EVERYTHING OFF that can interfere with the quality of your work. Sure-social media can be a great marketing tool but it can become your worst nightmare if it gets in the way of productivity or relationship building. Learn to discipline yourself and know when it’s time to get things done!

Time management is key to the success of any business. If you are a business leader who is guilty of procrastination and inefficiency it may be time to hire an Executive Coach. Email at info@excellencebymonicaguzman.com for a free consultation!
